Letter from Albia

I received my very favorite first letter ever, because there was so much love pouring from this sweet family! I sponsored adorable little Albia back in August and even though I feel in love with her instantly, my connection to her now feels so much stronger thanks to a letter from her, a letter from her mom, and photos! These extra touches are rare and unexpected, but it means so much towards building the relationship further.

Albia is 5 and lives in the Philippines.

Albia’s letter uses the introductory About Me template. I learned that she is 103 cm tall (3’4″), she has two siblings and is the middle child, and her shoe size is 27. One thing she does really well is singing, and her favorite part of her body is her hair. She is medium in build. It says “Dear Ms. Alisa, Thank you so much for the letter and for choosing me. I am now in Kinder II. Love, Albia”

Such a cute little drawing! And here are the extra photos her family sent! This is the first time that I’ve received extra photos that weren’t for a gift. I love getting to see her parents and sisters and a glimpse of their house. I wouldn’t have been able to see any of this otherwise!

And her mother wrote a whole letter on her own too, which is also a first for me! It really made me connect with her in a greater way than I’m usually able to connect with parents of my sponsored children. Her love of and pride for her family is evident.

“Hello Ms. Alisa! Good day to you. I am Benia, mother of Albia. I am glad to know you. I am thankful that you’re the sponsor (Albia’s sponsor); like you we also wanted to know more. Albia’s favorite color is orange. We also have a pet- a cat named Coorkie. Albia is now in Kindergarten. In the future she also wants to be a teacher like you. She also likes to teach other children how to write, to draw, to color, and how to sing. We sent some photos of our family and Albia, too! Our family is thankful because Albia has a sponsor like you. May God bless you and your family for being a channel of blessing to others who are in need. God Bless! Respectfully yours, Benia”

Letter from Oxford!

I recently received a new letter from cute little Oxford!

IMG_3778

Oxford is 6 and lives in Ghana.

The letter uses the Weather template. There are two seasons in Ghana, namely dry season and wet season. Right now, the weather is cold. When the weather is sunny, he likes to play football, swim, and read story books. Oxford likes it most when the weather is cold, because it is always favorable for playing with friends. “Dear Alisa, pray for me to God to grant me wisdom and to help me to become a great person in the future, says Oxford. I am doing very well. I thank you for the words of encouragement. May the Good Lord bless you. Thank you, says Oxford.”

The blue orange made me smile! His ball and chair are very good, as is his perspective drawing of a house!

Letter from Elvis!

I always love hearing from Elvis and his tutor Eva. I love Eva so much, and she is so much a part of my wonderful experience in sponsoring Elvis, that I recently wrote a card just for her to thank her and make sure she knows what a wonderful job she does and how much I appreciate her. In the latest letter, I got to hear back from both of them!

Elvis is 6 and lives in Bolivia.

The letter uses the My Community template. Elvis’ community is located in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. People speak Spanish and Aymara and the weather is cold. Typical food is plato paceño. “Beloved Sponsor Alisa, It is a privilege to write you again. Greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior. We feel very happy to get your pretty letters. Elvis is happy to hear more from you. He thanks you for the pretty correspondences. His three wishes are to be a professional (doctor), help the rest, and that his parents go to church. As tutor, I feel happy that my child Elvis gets to know you more, he loves you a lot and he looks forward to meet you soon. Until another opportunity, with lots of affection, Elvis and Eva. He asks with lots of respect prayer for his dad that works a lot, you are always in our prayers day by day.”

I pray that Compassion offers a summer sponsor tour to Bolivia so that I can go visit, because I will make it work and be there in a heartbeat. This is the first I’ve heard that his parents do not attend church, so I will be praying extra for them that their hearts will be opened. Usually it’s an exciting moment when a child starts writing letters on his own, but when Elvis does, it will be bittersweet, because I will miss Eva writing them with him!

“Dear Alisa, God bless you dear godmother, may the glory of God fall on you. Today I’ll give you these lines. I’m especially glad to share with you this letter and tell you my school vacations have been fun. I wake up late, I’m in my home and watch TV, visit my sister and talk with her, and she gives me lots of tips. I also tell you that my school vacations last about 30 days. I don’t have a favorite food. I like all sorts of food. During my vacations I like to share with my family. In my next vacations I would like to go to Medellin, I think it’s a very nice place. For me it is important to express my gratitude for all the letters you sent me and the gifts I receive from you. I would love to know, how long are your vacations? What season are you in now? I leave you hoping for a quick response. I wish you again that God bless you!”

Letter from Evelin About our Day Together!

My first letter from Evelin since my visit to Guatemala to meet her had been in translation for almost a month, and it was a challenging wait. But I was so excited when it finally came through! I also have another letter from her in translation, which I will hopefully get to read soon too. It was well worth the wait, though, because she talked all about our day together at the zoo and it was wonderfully sweet! I think back to how much I prayed about which child from Guatemala to sponsor and which country to visit this summer. Each step of the way, God brought me to this special girl. I think about how it was an instant connection when we saw each other. I’m not exaggerating when I say I couldn’t possibly love her any more than I do.

“Hello Dear Friend, Evelin is writing to thank you for visiting her. She thinks that it is a great blessing to have you here, in her country, and being able to meet you, because she was not expecting such a great surprise. May God bless you for your great love. Evelin wants to thank you for your gift which was a doll and a coloring book. She really liked the stickers as well as the map of where you live, the notepad and the crayons. She also wants to thank you for the English book and the prayer book, because she is using them in her backpack. She wants to tell you that you look very pretty and she really likes your hair. She wants to thank you for taking her to the zoo with you. She really liked the elephant and the giraffe that she fed. It made her very happy. She is especially grateful for having spent time with you. She thanks you for all of the love that you have given her and she says that she loves you very much. She asks you to pray for her family so that God will bless them and will watch over them. She wants to know what is the name of your dad, your mom, and your brother? She wants to thank you for your beautiful gifts and for your love.”

My heart is so full and I am a very blessed sponsor!

He also says he will also try to make a difference even now as he grows up and later on as an adult. He continued to thank you for supporting him. He concluded by saying you pray for him to keep with good health and also continue to perform well in class.”

Letter and Picture from Lucia!

I was thrilled to get a letter recently from Lucia, and a very sweet one that filled a page of stationery at that! But the best part was definitely a surprise photo attached! Typically, only a gift of $60+ gets a photo, although sometimes centers will send them for gifts of less. The gift that the photo was for was $20, so I wasn’t expecting a photo, but it was a wonderful surprise!

Lucia is 21 and lives in El Salvador.

“Dear Alisa, Lucia greets you with affection and hopes that you are enjoying perfect health with your loved ones. On this letter Lucia wants to tell you how she has fun. At home she likes to color, run, do the cleaning, cooking, listen to worship songs, and make handcrafts to decorate the house. If she gets bored she likes to sleep on a hammock and swing. When she is outside she likes to write and go for walks. She likes to tell jokes with her friends. She would like to know: have you ever felt bored? What do you do in that case? She thanks you for the letter and the picture; she says that she is fine. On the computer she likes to draw and write and she thanks you for the blessing that you sent. She bought milk, cereal, beans, sugar, rice, soup, cookies, and salt. It was a great blessing for her and her family. Also she loves you and asks you to help her pray so she can learn more in her studies. She says goodbye wishing you lots of blessings.”

This bubbly, lovely young lady has been a huge blessing to me so far. I know my sponsorship of her will only be for one more year, but I’m so blessed that God brought her into my life. And I’m so thankful that she has such a wonderful Compassion center that takes care of her and her mother and where she has friends and can learn and have fun!
